700 peacekeepers to be sent to South Sudan
China said on Thursday it will contribute 700 troops to a UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. The troops will help the UN protect citizens and humanitarian workers and will participate in other security-related activities in the world's newest nation, Defense Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said. The precise location and the timing of the deployment were still being negotiated, Geng said. China has more than 1,800 peacekeepers in Africa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
