Ebola could infect 1.4 million
US health officials laid out on Tuesday worst-case and best-case scenarios for the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, warning that the number of infected people could rise to at least 1.4 million by mid-January - or peak well below that, if efforts to control the outbreak are ramped up. The widely varying projections by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were based on conditions in late August and do not take into account a recent international surge in medical aid for the stricken region.

Govt set to buy 40 F-35A jets
South Korea will buy 40 F-35A fighter jets from Lockheed Martin for about $7 billion in the country's biggest weapons purchase, officials said on Wednesday. South Korea has traditionally favored importing fighter jets and other weapons from the United States, which stations about 28,500 soldiers in the country. Agency and military officials said the new jets are to be delivered to the South Korea between 2018 and 2025.

Putin confirms he'll go to summit
Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed that he will attend an Asia-Europe summit in Italy next month in what will be his first encounter with Western leaders since the Ukraine crisis deepened dramatically this summer. "He has confirmed he is coming," an Italian government official said on Wednesday. Italy is hosting the Oct 16-17 summit in Milan as it currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union.

Asylum seekers to be resettled
Cambodia announced on Wednesday that it will sign a deal with Australia this week to resettle people who were denied asylum there. Cambodia's Foreign Ministry said the agreement will be signed on Friday, but gave no details.
