Gritty win over Bulgarian squad marks return to Champions League

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers drew encouragement from his side's perseverance after it eked out a 2-1 win over Bulgarian newcomer Ludogorets Razgrad on its return to the Champions League on Tuesday.

The five-time champion required a stoppage-time penalty from captain Steven Gerrard to secure victory in the Group B game after Dani Alabo had canceled out Mario Balotelli's 82nd-minute opener for the host.
