By China Daily | China Daily | Updated: 2014-09-17 07:07

Historical relationships between China and Sri Lanka date back over 20 centuries based on their shared religious and cultural values.

The earliest mention of present-day Sri Lanka in China's written record took place during the Han Dynasty (206 BC to AD 220), when China sent envoys to the country.

In the fifth century, during the Eastern Jin Dynasty in China, Chinese scholar monk Fa Xian went to study in Sri Lanka and brought back Buddhist scriptures.
