Pan Shiyi and Zhang Xin, the husband and wife who founded real estate giant SOHO China, gave $15 million to Harvard University in June as part of a $100 million donation to help allow Chinese students from poor backgrounds to attend the world's top universities.

Wang Jianlin, the billionaire chairman of Wanda Group, pledged to set up a charitable foundation with 90 percent of his personal wealth after his group was listed.

Ma Yun, founder and chairman of e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, announced a plan in April to set up a charitable trust fund with co-founder Joseph Tsai.
