Authority reins in overseas artistic performances to curb publicity stunts

By Han Bingbin | China Daily | Updated: 2014-07-11 07:02

China's cultural authority has restricted domestic artistic troupes from performing at famous venues abroad, as many such events are deemed to be publicity stunts rather than in pursuit of artistic merit.

The Ministry of Culture began on Thursday requiring cultural departments at all levels to refuse approval for any self-funded performance that targets overseas venues but is not part of the venue's regular performance season. Government-funded projects are strictly forbidden from going abroad to raise their prestige.

Neither can groups or individuals perform at international organizations' headquarters without the approval of the ministry and the resident Chinese delegation.
