It was about 9 pm when Li Xianhua returned to his dormitory after a day's work.
Li, 43, had just finished drying a full load of seaweed in Xiapu county of Ningde in Fujian province.
"This is backbreaking stuff. I need to work more than 10 hours a day," he said. "The harvesting season lasts only about two months, but the work also depends on weather conditions."
