Carved seal carries mark of a lost love

In 1860, Wu Changshuo and some of his family fled their home to escape from the Taiping Rebellion's invasion. Wu left behind his 15-year-old common-law wife, Zhang Shi, to look after his mother.

When Wu returned two years later his mother told him that Zhang was dead and had been buried under a tree.

Brokenhearted, Wu tried to dig out her body but found nothing.
