German-born super sub lifts US

By Agence France-Presse in Natal, Brazil | China Daily | Updated: 2014-06-18 07:15

German-born United States defender John Brooks came off the bench to stun Ghana with the late winning goal in a 2-1 victory in Natal on Monday, putting a huge dent in the 2010 World Cup quarterfinalist's dream of duplicating that feat.

Clint Dempsey scored the opener after just 29 seconds and Brooks headed the dramatic winner off a corner kick to send the USA's German coach Jurgen Klinsmann into a wild celebration.

Andre Ayew equalized for Ghana eight minutes before the final whistle, but Brooks' first goal for his adopted country avenged defeats to the same opposition in the past two World Cups - the latter when Ghana went on to the quarterfinals.
