Canada
Suspect captured in police killings
Canadian police have arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting three police officers and wounding two more, ending a massive manhunt, the police said on Friday. The shooting in the eastern city of Moncton was one of the worst of its kind in Canada, where gun laws are stricter than in the United States and deadly attacks on police are rare.
Afghanistan
Top candidate eludes assassins
Afghan presidential front-runner Abdullah Abdullah escaped an assassination attempt on Friday when two blasts hit his campaign motorcade in Kabul, killing at least four people just ahead of a hotly contested runoff election. "The first attack was a suicide car bomb on a convoy of Dr Abdullah Abdullah and the second was a mine attack," said police officer Sayed Gul Agha Hashemi.
Brazil
Strike, protest flare before Cup
Brazil's biggest city confronted a second straight day of commuting chaos on Friday, as striking subway workers and a protest over housing conditions tangled the streets of Sao Paulo less than a week before it hosts the opening match of the World Cup.
Police used tear gas to break up a demonstration blocking access to one metro station.
