Peace, cooperation needed
Any country that is leading the world must follow the historic trends of peace and cooperation, the Foreign Ministry said on Thursday after US President Barack Obama laid out the US' new military policy.
"China used to be the most powerful country in the world in history, for no less than 100 years. Going through prosperity and decline, China has learned from its experiences and lessons," ministry spokesman Qin Gang said at a news briefing.
He quoted from ancient Chinese historical works in explaining that a country's rulers have to set high standards for themselves and treat people with benevolence.
In response to Obama's call for the US Congress to finance a $5 billion plan to fight terrorism, Qin said "terrorism is the common enemy of countries around the world".
This year China has suffered severely from attacks plotted by the East Turkestan Islamic Movement and other terrorist groups.
"The international society should beef up cooperation and combat terrorism together," he said, stressing that there should not be double standards on that issue.
