Ex-minister held for decrying coup
Armed troops detained a Thai Cabinet minister who defiantly emerged from hiding on Tuesday to condemn last week's military coup and urge a return to civilian rule, in the first public appearance by any member of the ousted government. Soldiers took Education Minister Chaturon Chaisang into custody in a chaotic scene at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand, where he had just concluded a surprise news conference.

Modi meets with Pakistani PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the leaders of Pakistan on Tuesday, one day after being sworn in. Modi and Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif smiled as they posed for photographs ahead of their nearly hourlong meeting. No details were immediately released about the discussion. Modi was expected to ask Pakistan to hasten its investigation into the 2008 terror attack on Mumbai, India's financial hub, in which Pakistani militants killed 166 people.

Ebola claims two W. Africa victims
Health authorities in Guinea and Sierra Leone said two new deaths have been confirmed as resulting from the Ebola virus, taking the death toll to 170 and raising fears that West Africa's first outbreak is not yet under control. The new deaths occurred far from where the outbreak began.
