Sound Bites

If China is to attract foreign experts, not just for short periodic visits, as in my case, but as permanent faculty members of universities such as SJTU, then it is essential also to provide a congenial and supportive intellectual environment, which takes for granted that real innovation in science and technology must inevitably rest on the freedom to challenge even the most strongly established beliefs.
