Photo: The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the major source of the country's largest rivers, has seen its glaciers shrink rapidly over the past 30 years, a research institute revealed on Wednesday. According to the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, glaciers on the plateau and in surrounding areas have shrunk by 15 percent from 53,000 to 45,000 square km over the past three decades.

Bilingual: In a prelude to protests planned for the McDonald's annual shareholders meeting on Thursday, police arrested 139 protesters on Wednesday afternoon outside McDonald's headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois. Oak Brook police said protesters arrested for criminal trespassing were from a group of 101 McDonald's workers and 38 clergy and union activists who chose to cross a police barricade.
