Sales remain unchanged despite labeling

China Daily | Updated: 2014-04-02 07:41

Separating genetically modified foods from non-GM foods on supermarket shelves did not have any apparent influence on the GM food market in Lanzhou, Gansu province, an observer said.

In December, the Gansu Food and Drug Administration announced a new regulation on the sale of GM foods in supermarkets, which required that they be sold in a special sales area, isolated from non-GM foods and marked with a visible green-and-white label.

He Liwei, a food safety supervisor of a chain supermarket in Lanzhou, said that since the regulation took effect on March 1, non-GM food had been selling better than GM food, but separating them did not have much effect on overall sales.
