Shipwreck claims 98 lives
At least 98 people died when a boat capsized on Lake Albert, which lies between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said on Monday. African authorities and refugees reported 41 people rescued and 98 bodies recovered after Saturday's disaster, the refugee agency said in a statement. "As many as 250 people may have been aboard the boat."

Humans blamed for 2013 weather
The UN weather agency blames human impact on the global climate for much of last year's extreme weather that wreaked havoc in the Asia-Pacific region and in Europe. The World Meteorological Organization said 2013 was the sixth-warmest year on record. The agency's secretary-general, Michel Jarraud, said on Monday that a rise in sea level led to increasing damage from storm surges and coastal flooding.

Convicted killer beheaded
A Saudi man convicted of killing an associate in a dispute was beheaded by sword on Monday, the country's interior ministry said. The execution, in the northeastern city of Hafr al-Batin, brings to 12 the number of death sentences carried out this year in the kingdom. Saudi Arabia beheaded 78 people in 2013, according to an AFP count.

Victims seek full account
Bangladesh began compiling details about the victims of the 2013 Rana Plaza factory collapse as part of a global compensation deal, but dozens of people have taken to the streets demanding a more complete accounting of the disaster. The collapse killed more than 1,100 people and highlighted the grim conditions in Bangladesh's garment industry.

Commuter train derails, 32 hurt
An eight-car commuter train derailed early on Monday at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, injuring 32 people on board after it failed to stop at an underground station at one of the busiest airports in the United States. Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago said the train "climbed over the last stop, jumped up on the sidewalk and then went up the stairs and escalator".

Man-eating tiger hunt called off
India has called off its hunt for a man-eating tiger after six weeks with no reports of a new killing. The tiger has killed at least nine people since late December, eluding a team of hunters in the state of Uttar Pradesh who set out on foot to kill the animal.
