In recent years, the US Environmental Protection Agency has used a wide range of policies - including strict controls on sources of fine-particle emissions, such as power stations and vehicles - that have resulted in reductions of more than 90 percent. The EPA ordered buses and light-trucks to use clean energy to reduce emissions, while introducing stricter standards for diesel-engine vehicles and demanding that engine manufacturers update their products to promote environmental protection.
