President declares state of emergency

South Sudan's President Salva Kiir declared a state of emergency in Unity and Jonglei states on Wednesday.

"President Salva has declared the state of emergency in Unity and Jonglei," said the South Sudanese government via Twitter.

The two regions have been the focus of fighting against rebel forces loyal to former vice-president Riek Machar that has killed more than 1,000 people.
