The year gone by, caught on camera

As the new year dawns, China can look back on a hectic 2013.

Global attention was focused firmly on the world's second largest and fastest developing economy, with leaders from more than 50 countries visiting China last year. The international visits made by President Xi Jinping also made headline news, while first lady Peng Liyuan caught the eye with her stylish elegance. The successful launch and landing of the Chang'e-3 lunar probe continued to realize China's space ambitions.

However, there were problems at sea, on land and in the air. Tensions between Beijing and Tokyo grew following Japan's unlawful claim to China's Diaoyu Islands. Hazardous smog spread across the country at an alarming pace, bringing increased awareness of personal health, while horrifying stories emerged of child endangerment and abuse.

But amid the gloom came light, with reports of rescuers jumping into rivers to save children, and endearing images of mothers holding sleeping infants in emergency huts at the Lushan earthquake zone in Sichuan province.

Over the past year, China Daily has helped readers to keep abreast of events at home and abroad, enabling them to share people's hardships and joy.

Our photo-editing team has selected the pictures it believes best reflect 2013 at home, to share with readers. While the selections mirror just part of China's rapidly changing story, we hope they serve as a useful guide to events and achievements over the past 12 months.

Our photographers are looking forward to further showcasing their dedication and professionalism in the upcoming Year of the Horse.
