Season of dreams
As the year draws to a close, a show about wishes and dreams could be the perfect way to reflect on 2013. With lyrics and music written by Stephen Sondheim, the musical Into the Woods premiered in San Diego in 1986 and moved to Broadway the next year. Now the Central Academy of Drama will stage the work, directed by Tom Ossowski. The musical tells the story of a baker and his wife who are cursed by a witch to remain childless. But the witch says if they can find something special in three days, they can have a baby. Thus they set off a journey into the woods and meet characters from other fairy tales, including Little Red Riding, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella. "The musical is about wishes and dreams. No matter if you live in New York or Beijing, it's a universal theme," the director says. "But when you realize it, you may find it is not what you really want or it is not the way you want to get."
