By Luo Wangshu and Tan Yingzi in Chongqing | China Daily | Updated: 2013-11-28 07:19

Wang Xiaowan read the new student guidebook from the University of Cincinnati as she embarked on her college life. The book was useful but what really excited her was the practical workplace experience she will gain thanks to an innovative program.

The 19-year-old is a freshman at the Joint Co-op Institute, set up by Chongqing University and the University of Cincinnati .

As part of the co-op program, instead of spending four years at university, she will spend her first year in Chongqing and her fifth in Cincinnati. In her sophomore year, she will take part in paid, co-op work experience.
