Dressed in a light-blue T-shirt, baby-faced Yan Xiaohan was as excited about his first day as a student at Peking University in September as any freshman.

What set him apart was the fact he was only 13 years old.

Born in November 1999, Yan took the gaokao, the national college entrance exam, in June and scored 698 out of 750.
