China Daily | Updated: 2013-10-14 06:51

"If I had known he would really cut his leg off, I wouldn't have let him stay alone."

Shen Zhonghong, the wife of Zheng Yanliang, a farmer from Hebei province who amputated his diseased leg with a knife and a hacksaw in April 2012, talking about how it happened to Xinhua News Agency. Diagnosed with arterial thrombosis of the lower limbs in early 2012, Zheng suffered aches in his buttocks and thighs. Local hospitals refused to take him in or demanded exorbitant fees. One day after he quarreled with his wife about his idea to amputate on his own, he removed his leg, which had begun to fester. After his story went viral on the Internet, he was taken to a hospital in Baoding on Friday. Doctors are working on plans for his further treatment.
