UPS cargo plane crashes
A large UPS cargo plane crashed early on Wednesday morning near the airport in Birmingham, Alabama, the US Federal Aviation Administration said. The United Parcel Service Inc Flight 1354, en route from Louisville, Kentucky, to Birmingham, crashed on approach about 6 am, according to the FAA. There was no immediate information on whether any people were killed or injured.
Japan
Bad wiring found on Dreamliner
Japan's All Nippon Airways said on Wednesday it had found defective wiring in a fire-extinguishing system on three of its Boeing Dreamliners, prompting rival Japan Airlines to abort a Helsinki-bound flight. The two Japanese carriers are the trouble-plagued Dreamliner's biggest customers. ANA said it discovered the faulty wiring on a plane at Tokyo's Haneda airport before a scheduled flight to Frankfurt.
Canada
Railway operating license pulled
Canada's transportation agency said on Tuesday it will suspend the operating license of the US-based rail company whose runaway oil train derailed and exploded in a Quebec town, killing 47 people. The agency said it planned to take away the certificate of fitness for the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway and its Canadian subsidiary, effective Aug 20.
Mexico
Govt to appeal drug lord release
Mexico's attorney general said on Tuesday the government would appeal the court ruling that set free Rafael Caro Quintero, a drug lord convicted of killing a US drug agent in 1985. Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam said during a public event that the government was "preparing" an appeal to overturn the verdict, which set Caro Quintero free 28 years into a 40-year sentence.
