Golden Penda, the city flower of Cairns of Australia, blossoms in the Sino-Australian Friendship Garden in Zhanjiang of China.
As its name implies, the garden, completed in September 2007, is a "permanent symbol of the close Sister Cities relation between Zhanjiang in China and Cairns in Australia", said Kevin Byme, Mayor of Cairns.
Altogether 465 plants of more than 20 species peculiar to Australia were given to Zhanjiang from 2006 to 2007. Tended by the garden's staff, about 60 percent of these tropical plants have survived Zhanjiang's subtropical climate and have grown from 20-centimeter seeds to five-meter trees.
