UN official calls for calm
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, on Friday urged all parties in Egypt to make a concerted effort to restore calm to ensure that the human rights of all citizens are respected and protected and subsequently entrenched in sound laws and institutions.
Pillay expressed support for all Egyptians striving for a country that will safeguard their human rights and freedom, and guarantee the rule of law.
"The country has so far failed to seize the opportunity to respond to the aspirations of all its citizens and move toward a truly tolerant and inclusive society, based on human rights norms and the rule of law. A concerted effort is needed by all parties to establish sound political and legal institutions," she said.
Pillay added that she is concerned by reports of widespread detention of leading members of the Muslim Brotherhood.
