Shanglin's mining tradition

China Daily | Updated: 2013-06-07 07:12

Shanglin, a State-level impoverished county in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, contributes around 90 percent of the Chinese miners in Ghana, the second-largest gold producing country in Africa.

Gold mining is a traditional business in Shanglin and most locals are skilled in the trade.

A story of a villager from Shanglin who invested 5 million yuan ($810,000) in Ghana's gold mining industry in 2005 brought back 100 million yuan in three years encouraged more miners from Shanglin to work at sites in Ghana.

Today, more than 12,000 miners from Shanglin work in Ghana's gold industry, according to Chinese media reports.
