Building regional confidence
Initiated in 2002 and hosted by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the IISS Asia Security Summit, also known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, is an annual event held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore.
The conference is a response to the clear need for a forum in which Asia-Pacific defense ministers can engage in dialogue aimed at building confidence and fostering practical security cooperation.
The Shangri-La Dialogue is the only event that gathers all of the national defense department officials from the region to discuss regional security cooperation on defense issues.
In 2011, then Chinese Minister of National Defense Liang Guanglie attended the 10th dialogue, the first time that China attended the meeting at the full ministerial level.
