Mudslides kill 13 after heavy rain

Mudslides after torrential rains have killed 13 people at a quarry in the northern Tanzanian town of Arusha, a senior government official said on Tuesday. Tanzania's buoyant economy has fueled a building boom, especially in the center of the tourist town, but high demand for construction materials has led to a proliferation of new quarries, raising concern for safety standards.

New chief takes helm at BBC

New BBC Director-General Tony Hall took up his post on Tuesday, starting the task of restoring the reputation of the world's biggest broadcaster, which has been rocked by a child sex abuse scandal. Finance minister steps down

Cypriot Finance Minister Michalis Sarris submitted his resignation on Tuesday, soon after concluding important negotiations with international lenders on a bailout for the eastern Mediterranean island country. President Nicos Anastasiades has accepted the resignation, local media reports cited his spokesman as saying.
