Protests erupt over court ruling

Egyptian protesters torched buildings in Cairo and tried unsuccessfully to disrupt shipping on the Suez Canal, as a court ruling on a deadly soccer riot stoked rage in the country. The ruling enraged residents of Port Said by confirming the death sentences on 21 local soccer fans for their role in the riot last year.

Suu Kyi still opposition leader

Aung San Suu Kyi was selected on Sunday to remain as head of Myanmar's main opposition party, keeping her leadership post even as the party undergoes a makeover to adjust to the country's new democratic framework. She was elected chairwoman of the National League for Democracy's executive board on the final day of a three-day party congress.

Afghanistan

Taliban in talks with US: Karzai

Afghan President Hamid Karzai criticized the Taliban on Sunday for holding daily talks with the United States as they also launch suicide attacks that kill civilians and children.
