Kunqu on the big screen

What's new

A new film of the Kunqu Opera A Dream of Red Mansions has debuted at Peking University, launching a tour of the film in colleges and universities in Beijing. Based on the Kunqu production of A Dream of Red Mansions directed by Gong Yingtian, the film presents the same cast, with stars from the Northern Kunqu Opera Theater and Shanghai Kunqu Opera Theater. Written by Cao Xueqin in the middle of the 18th century, A Dream of Red Mansions is one of China's four great classical novels. It is the first time that the Kunqu version of the work is presented in a film. The film was shown in 2012 in Paris, and will be screened in China's cinemas later this year.
