China Daily | Updated: 2012-10-31 07:49

Although the tiles and scoring rules used in mahjong may differ slightly, depending on regional variations, the game is very similar in all versions.

Four players sit in the positions of East, South, West and North and each roll dice. The person who rolls the highest number starts the game

There are 136 tiles, and the object is to collect a set of 14 tiles, grouped into four melds of three tiles each, plus a matching pair. The melds can be either three identical tiles, known as a pung, a straight of three tiles of one suit marked with consecutive numbers, known as a chow, or four identical tiles, known as a kong.
