Key dates in Meles Zenawi's political career
May 1955
Meles Zenawi is born in Adwa in Ethiopia's Tigray region. In 1974 Meles takes part in a revolt against the dictatorship of Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam. He helps found the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front in 1975, becomes leader in 1989. Later he sets up the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front.
