Donor nations pledge $16b in Afghan aid at Tokyo meeting

By Agencies in Tokyo | China Daily | Updated: 2012-07-09 07:59

Countries pledged on Sunday to give Afghanistan $16 billion to prevent the country from sliding back into turmoil when foreign combat troops depart while calling on Kabul to adopt reforms to fight graft.

A statement at the close of a conference in Tokyo confirmed that the donors will provide $16 billion in civilian aid through 2015 so long as the country meets several pre-conditions, such as embarking on a campaign to fight corruption.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai was in the Japanese capital along with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to discuss how a planned "transformation decade" will unfold after NATO-led troops leave the country.
