Myanmar set to regain international aid

By Hu Yinan | China Daily | Updated: 2012-04-06 08:04

Decreasing Western hostility toward Myanmar in the wake of Aung San Suu Kyi's victory in the recent parliamentary by-elections may result in a more "comprehensive, balanced" foreign policy for the Southeast Asian state, analysts said.

The impoverished but resource-rich country, which in the past two decades has lost billions of dollars in global aid per year, is set to regain international assistance.

Washington on Wednesday said it was ready to relax some sanctions on Myanmar, including a ban on US companies investing in or offering financial services to the country. The European Union, too, has hinted that some sanctions may be lifted.
