Journalist wins charity award

Chang Ping-yi, a journalist and founder of the "Wings of Hope" charity organization, received the 2011 Moving China Person of the Year award in Beijing in February for her efforts to provide quality education for poor children in a remote village in Southwest China's Sichuan province, said Xinhua News Agency.

Since 1999, Chang has raised funds in Taiwan to build new school buildings and provide financial assistance for needy students in the village of Dayingpan. Through her efforts, the village's only school, which was previously equipped with just two shabby classrooms and a single teacher, now has a faculty of 12, as well as 207 students from both Dayingpan and neighboring villages. Chang was the first prize winner from Taiwan, the report added.
