China to support NGOs in fighting poverty

China will support nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in joining poverty-alleviation works after the country lifted its poverty standard and added more than 100 million people living below the poverty line, Beijing News reported on Dec 7.

The government will encourage the public as well as NGOs to help the nation's battle against poverty by giving policy support and providing services, said Fan Xiaojian, who heads the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development. Fan also underlined the importance of government supervision, saying the government should create a transparent environment for charity funds.
