Radio show holds auditions to survive

By Yang Yijun | China Daily | Updated: 2011-10-26 07:38

SHANGHAI - The only radio program using the standard Shanghai dialect is holding auditions for anchors so it can stay on the air after its current broadcasters retire in five years.

The program, A Fu Gen, airs on Shanghai East Radio Station's traditional art channel. It features discussions on current events and information that its middle-aged listeners might find useful.

From the 1960s to the 1980s the program was a household name. However, its audience is dwindling because fewer people, especially in the younger generations, speak the Shanghai dialect.
