Expat bosses and cultural differences
One of the hardest challenges for bosses in the global economy is managing cultural diversity. This means managing a workforce that comes from all over the world and adapting to an entirely new work setting in a foreign land. Cross-cultural intelligence and staying global in a local context is the key for bosses to become effective leaders.
Foreign language
There is no better way to integration than to learn the local language. This can take a long time, however, and may not be sustainable for short-term stints. A more practical strategy would be to learn the common phrases and terms so that you can communicate with your employees without the aid of an interpreter.
Show that you "understand"
Showing empathy can be very important in gaining the trust of employees. You can do so by showing that you understand local practices and customs and accepting them, too.
Work capabilities matter
In trying to lead the organization, do not always rely on rationality. Attempt to understand the fears and concerns of employees and address them sincerely.
Leadership style
Remember that national cultures vary in many dimensions such as "power distance" and "uncertainty avoidance". Therefore, you should mold your leadership style to fit the culture. It is important to be flexible. A more directive leadership style may be more suitable to cultures in Asia where there is a clear need to avoid uncertainty.
Use technology
Technology is a great leveler. Leverage it. It is a great way to communicate, especially with a younger workforce. Use it to for direct communication with the employees and to share ideas with them on a frequent basis.
Handling conflict
Conflict situations are natural. When they happen in a foreign culture, special care must be taken to handle them. It is also important to establish norms that show all employees are treated equally and fairly, and that rewards and punishments apply to all.
