Plan to raise fares ends strike, sends cabbies back to work

China Daily | Updated: 2011-08-05 07:54

HANGZHOU - Striking cab drivers in this eastern Chinese city returned to work on Thursday after three days of protests that prompted the local government to promise to raise the fares they can collect.

They began to take passengers again on Thursday morning and, contrary to what they had done during the past three days, no longer gathered in places downtown.

"Now that the government has pledged to adjust fares, we have decided to go back to work," said a representative of the cab drivers on strike, who would only state his surname, Chen. "We hope these new measures can be put into effect as soon as possible to relieve us of some of the burdens in our lives."
