BEIJING - Henan province is pledging to make homosexual men more aware of their risk of contracting AIDS and to make treatments for the disease more widely available.

The Henan government recently issued a plan to contain the spread of HIV - the virus that causes AIDS - within the province. Its goal is to keep the number of people who have the virus below 65,000. It also wants to ensure the rate of the infected population that dies from AIDS stays below 6 percent.

Henan is now home to more than 50,000 people who are confirmed to have HIV or AIDS, making it the section of China that contains the third most carriers of the virus. It follows Yunnan province and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region in that regard.
