Gianniotis eyes happy homecoming

China Daily | Updated: 2011-07-21 08:04

SHANGHAI - Qualifying for the London Olympics by winning the world swimming championships 10km open water event should be something of a homecoming, Greece's Spyros Gianniotis said on Wednesday.

"My mother is English, so the London Olympics is like my home court," Gianniotis said after he upset favorite Thomas Lurz of Germany at Jinshan City Beach. "I wish I can achieve a good result in London."

The 31-year-old Gianniotis pipped Lurz by just 2.5 seconds, leading home the first 10 finishers who all qualified for the 2012 Olympics in which the race will be held on the Serpentine in Hyde Park.
