Harnesses, not just for horses and pop stars

By Marisa Meltzer | The New York Times | Updated: 2011-07-17 08:42

Harnesses have been cropping up on pop stars and other performers. Lady Gaga's backup dancers wore gold ones by Zana Bayne, a New York designer, on a recent television show. But one doesn't have to be a rock star or a horse to pull off this look.

Harnesses are for sale at Topshop, a British retailer with stores in 20 countries, and were shown in the spring 2010 Comme des Garcons collection. They have been spotted on celebrities including Ciara and Rihanna.

"One of the early inspirations was when I saw a girl in London wearing a harness over a white shirtdress and it was pretty much the chicest thing imaginable," said Ms. Bayne. She is now exploring "the extremes of what a harness can be."
