Students claim they were duped by college in volunteer scheme

By Shi Yingying | China Daily | Updated: 2011-07-07 07:57

SHENZHEN, Guangdong - Thousands of college students from the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region claim they were tricked into going to Shenzhen to be volunteers for the upcoming 26th World University Games. Instead they have been forced to take full-time jobs with low pay.

Many of the students are angry that their colleges, who encouraged them to be volunteers at the Games, are receiving payments for recruiting them while they are being made to work long hours for poor pay.

"Am I cheap labor or a volunteer? I'm confused about my identity here," said a student surnamed Wu, a 20-year-old from Nanning's Guangxi Vocational and Technical College of Communications, who is also one of the first students to turn to the media for help.
