YINING, Xinjiang - Looking at a black and green grassland that had been nearly eaten up by locusts, the Kazak herder Baratt wore an expression of intense sadness on his face.
On Wednesday, Baratt took his flock sheep several kilometers away from his house in search of "edible grass".
"The grassland in front of my house is crawling with grasshoppers these days, especially at noontime when the temperature is high," said the 50-year-old herder, who lives in Kazanqi village in Yining county, a famous agricultural region in the northwest of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.
