Police chief elected as Chongqing vice-mayor

SHANGHAI - A police chief famed for cracking down on gang crimes was elected the vice-mayor of Chongqing in a unanimous vote.
Wang Lijun, director of the Chongqing municipal public security bureau, was elected at the 24th session of the 3rd Standing Committee of the Chongqing Municipal People's Congress, the local legislature, after a vote on Friday morning, the Chongqing Evening News reported.
The 52-year-old Wang, of the Mongolian ethnic group, is well-known for his role in Chongqing's massive crackdown on crime syndicates in 2009, when he was appointed police chief of the city.
