Official gets life for taking bribes
A court in Southwest China's Chongqing municipality sentenced Li Tangtang, former vice-chairman of the Ningxia Hui autonomous region, to life imprisonment on Friday for taking bribes.
The No 5 Intermediate People's Court of Chongqing also ordered the confiscation of the former official's personal assets and stripped him of his political rights for life.
Li was found guilty of accepting 7.68 million yuan ($1.17 million) in bribes from auto companies, real estate developers and individuals from 1998 to 2009.
2 killed, 55 hurt in highway crash
Two people have been killed and 55 others injured after a bus carrying a tour group slammed into a road maintenance vehicle on a highway in South China's Guangdong province, traffic police said on Friday.
The tour bus, heading to Beihai city in the neighboring Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, rear-ended the road work vehicle at around 8:10 am on Thursday, one hour after it took the road from Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong, a spokesman with the highway's traffic control office said.
Hoof-and-mouth hits village cattle
Livestock in Southwest China's Guizhou province have tested positive for hoof-and-mouth disease, China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said on Friday.
The virus was detected in 87 cows and 4 pigs in Jinshan village, Tianzhu county, Qiandongnan Miao-Dong autonomous prefecture of Guizhou, on March 29.
It had killed 12 cows and 2 pigs, and all infected livestock and 680 other animals raised nearby had been killed and properly disposed of, it said.
'Beidou' orbiter launch is near
China will launch the eighth orbiter into space in "coming days" as part of its construction of an indigenous satellite navigation and positioning network.
The "Beidou", or Compass, navigation satellite will be launched on a Long March-3A carrier rocket, said an unidentified spokesman for the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Southwest China's Sichuan province.
The satellite will join seven others already in orbit to form a network, which will eventually consist of 35 satellites.
The network will provide satellite navigation, time and short message services for the Asia-Pacific region by 2012 and global services by 2020.
International fair plans made
The preparatory meeting on the 12th Western China International Fair, a gala jointly hosted by the 12 provinces, a municipality and autonomous regions in West China, was held on Friday in Kunming, Yunnan province. The meeting discussed and passed the general plan for the fair to be held in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, between Oct 18 and 22.
The fair is themed on "guiding international cooperation and expanding market share".
Cross-Straits culture event set
The Copyright Society of China and Fujian province will jointly hold a cultural trade fair, inviting a range of companies and individual artists from both sides of the Straits with their creative cultural arts and crafts, in Fuzhou, capital city of Fujian next month, said a press conference in Beijing on Friday.
More than 400 companies from both sides are expected to attend the fair and over 15,000 originally creative works will be exhibited in favor of trade.
