Tighter checks on travelers, imports

China Daily | Updated: 2011-03-17 07:59

BEIJING - Shanghai authorities have ordered tighter radiation checks on imports from Japan, including food and cargo, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Wednesday. Travelers arriving from Japan will also be closely checked.

The Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau announced a detailed list of goods for which Shanghai quarantine officials will be checking for radiation, following concerns about an escalating nuclear crisis in Japan after last week's earthquake damaged several reactors.

Items to be checked for radiation include seafood, grains, drinking water, vegetable and fruits, as well as cargo, post and personnel, the report said, quoting the bureau's announcement.
