Capital reacts with emotion to Japan disaster

It's been hard to avoid the news about Japan's recent horrific earthquake and devastating tsunami. The tremor was one of the most destructive ever seen. Measuring at 9.0-magnitude, it also has the unwelcome accolade of being among the five strongest since reliable records began 140 years ago.

Along with other countries, China has sent relief aid in the form of blankets, tents and emergency lights, as well as offered 30 million yuan toward the relief effort. A 15-strong emergency response team was sent on Sunday in order to give assistance, alongside teams from Western nations, to the overstretched Japanese search and rescue operations.

The reaction of Beijingers was naturally one of shock and sympathy. The great majority of netizens in the city expressed their condolences and deepest regret that such a tragedy has befallen an Asian neighbor.
