Meiji University, located in central Tokyo, has never strayed from its original mission of producing top-ranking, widely sought-after graduates.
The school started out as the Meiji Law School, founded by three lawyers after the 1868 Meiji Restoration. That followed centuries of isolation and domestic strife, after which imperial rule was reinstated in Japan and a new government was installed, ushering in modernization.
The school's original mission was to promote individualism and produce graduates who would adapt to the changing times and contribute to society.
